dc.description.abstractHawaiian honeycreepers are currently under grave threat of extinction, due primarily to infection from avian malaria, an introduced mosquito-borne disease. To reduce the burden of avian malaria on honeycreeper populations, it is necessary to suppress populations of the vector mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, which was also introduced to Hawaii. Wide-scale application of a mosquito-specific, bacterially-derived biopesticide has been used extensively for mosquito control in residential areas in the US and around the world. In this study, we demonstrate the efficacy of aerial application of a biopesticide (active ingredients Bti and Bs) in controlling populations of mosquitoes in forest bird habitat in Kauaʻi and Maui. This report also discusses operational protocols for adapting this tool to the Hawaiian context. The use of landscape-scale suppression of mosquitoes at the larval stage is an important component of an integrated vector management approach for sustained management of avian malaria in Hawaii.
