Abstract

Our current understanding of the function of the Hox cluster comes from elaborate studies of Drosophilaandvertebrates. It is known that Hox genes are transcription factors that regulate other genes and ultimately are responsible for the formation of the body plan. Based upon the high degree of conservation among the Hox genes, it is believed that these genes arose relatively early within the metazoa.
