Abstract

Censuses were conducted from 1970-1972 in the Kohala Mountain Forest, Hawai'i. Native passerines were the most commonly encountered birds, with the nectar guild of the Drepanididae having the greatest numbers of recorded individuals and being the most consistently detected birds. A number of species, known to have occurred historically in the forest, were not found during the study; however, four endangered species (koloa, 'io, Hawaii Creeper, nuku-pu'u) were recorded during count periods. The nuku-pu'u has not been reported previously from the island of Hawai'i. Species composition was constant in the forest throughout the year. However, the nectarivorous species in the principal study area did undergo significant changes in numbers over the annual cycle. The number of nectarivorous birds recorded/hour of censusing did not change significantly in the principal study site over the annual cycle. Breeding periods, as determined from active nests and census data, were found to lengthen somewhat the presently known breeding seasons of some species in other areas of Hawaii.
