Abstract

Description

Rachel Paris, the eldest daughter of Mildred Cataluna, was born in 1952 at Kapiʻolani Hospital. She moved to at Waiale‘e with her mother at a young age when her father, Tony Cataluna, began working at the University of Hawaiʻi Agricultural Research Station in the 1950s. They lived in housing that was designated for research station employees until the mid-1980s when Tony passed away and the family were no longer permitted to live there. Rachel attended Kahuku elementary school and regards Waiale‘e as her childhood home. Mildred Cataluna, known as Millie, was born on April 23, 1932 in Pa’īa, Maui and lived in Wailua, Kauaʻi for part of her early life. She moved to Waiale‘e in the 1950s with her eldest children when her husband, Tony Cataluna, was relocated to the University of Hawaiʻi Agricultural Research Station for work. During this time, she briefly worked at Kahuku hospital before taking up employment caring for patients at Crawford’s Home. When Tony passed away in the mid-1980s she relocated to Sunset Beach. Leona Lui Moepono was born in 1961 at Kapiʻolani Hospital to her parents Larry Roho and Eleanor McLemmy. She was raised in her family’s home in Waiale‘e and attended Kahuku Elementary until sixth grade. As a child, Leona moved to Maui for a few years before returning to Waiale‘e where she graduated from Kahuku High School in 1979. She has traveled the world as an employee for United Airlines, but still lives in her family home at Waiale‘e today with her husband and youngest son, where she farms and does crafts. In this interview, Rachel Paris joins her mother Mildred Cataluna and childhood friend Leona Lui to recall the fond memories of Waiale‘e.
