Abstract

Description

Genre: Fairy tale/ancestor myth. Title: Bai Léra. Kanda Séra tells a Palu'e fairy tale, about Bai and Léra, especially their children Embu and Maja. The two brothers Embu and Maja become full orphans after their mother disappear in the ocean after telling them about life, how to plant and get a good harvest. They must find bones of the dugong sea cow and place a little of it in every corner of the field when sowing. Once they have found a place to plant things, after some hardship, they follow their mother's advice and the plantation becomes fertile, all the Palu’e common crops grow. The gender of the names Bai and Léra are mixed up in the tale. Bai (also Shrimp) is usually a woman’s name, and Léra seems like a men’s name, like Léro, but it could be the reverse. Recorded 12 June 2015 in the morning in Kanda's home in Ko’a village by SD with the AT2020 external mic. With his wife Toji, Wéka and lakimosa Sundu. Kanda told two tales and his wife one on this occasion. See portrait. /SD
