Abstract

A sample of 46 obese adolescents, ranging in age from 9 1/2 to 18 years, was placed into one of five experimental conditions for the treatment of their obesity. These conditions included a no-treatment waiting-list control group (N= 7), a conventional diet group (N= 9), a conventional diet group which self-administered reinforcement contingent on following the diet (N= 10), a habit change group which received training in stimu1us- and self-control procedures (N = 12), and a habit change and conventional diet group which combined both self-control and diet programs (N= 8). The latter two groups also self-administered reinforcement contingent on following their programs. All subjects went through an initial assessment phase and, except for the control group, all received 12 weeks of treatment. (The control group was not seen again for 12 weeks, at which time treatment was delivered.) The results indicated that the four active treatment groups were generally superior to the control condition as measured by weight change, change in percentage overweight, and a reduction quotient. In addition, some evidence suggested that the group which received both dietary and habit change programs was most effective. Hypotheses were generated concerning the prediction of weight change and implications of the results were discussed.
