Abstract

Problem Statement: Hawai’i has the fifth largest community identifying as LGBTQ, which has experienced systemic discrimination, biases, and social stigma directly affecting their experience within the healthcare field. Efforts have been made to address these barriers through education. Despite these efforts, there is a paucity of nursing education regarding LGBTQ health which contributes to the delivery of subpar care. Purpose: To improve educational efforts towards LGBTQ health and DEI concepts at UHM NAWSON. Methods: Modules focused on the care of the LGBTQ patient paired with an LGBTQ simulation-based scenario were constructed to increase knowledge and confidence in caring for LGBTQ patients. Pre- and post-tests monitored knowledge and confidence while the simulation and debrief assessed the application of newly learned material. Results: The average score post-test assessed in Module 1 increased by 9% compared to the pre-test while in Module 2 the average score post-test increased by 11.3% compared to the post-test. In Module 3, self-rated knowledge increased to 4.43 (between good and excellent) post-module completion. In the two-month follow-up, there was a modest improvement in Module 1 post-test average scores, 0.35%, compared to a decrease of 0.41% seen in Module 2. Discussion: Even though there is a great deal of literature regarding the healthcare disparities experienced by LGBTQ individuals, there continues to be a scarcity in nursing education. Module pre-test results demonstrated the deficient knowledge of how to appropriately care for LGBTQ patients. Post-test results showed improvements however, scores declined in the two-month follow-up.
