Abstract
Gas adsorption phenomena have applications in many fields such as gas sensing, pollution reduction, and energy storage. In order to maximize performance in each of these areas, the underlying mechanisms of gas-surface interactions must be studied closely. However, custom apparati designed to study these interactions tend to be highly manual and involve hours-long processes. An automated apparatus allows for higher pareto efficiency and scalability of gas adsorption experimentation, thereby accelerating the development of new energy storage solutions and other technologies. This project demonstrates an automated apparatus that incorporates programmable instrumentation in order to relieve the user of tedious manual tasks. The apparatus was built and programmed to perform the gas adsorption experiment without human-interaction during the entire process. Testing shows successful actuation of process controllers and consistent data acquisition from process sensors. Sensor data shows stable readings across all process variables. Finally, execution of the entire process without human interaction was achieved.
