´Pataphysics and the Absurd Logic of Digital Technology

Abstract

In times when digital technology seems to be the solution to most of our problems, we present, in this conceptual paper, the useful concept of ´pataphysics to expand information systems research. ´pataphysics is the science of imaginary solutions and in this paper we present how this concept, and it’s sub-concepts, can assist research within information systems in at least three ways. First, it can contribute when critically reflecting on how we think about, develop, implement, and use digital technology. Second, `pataphysics can help us be proactive and not develop technologies that in a later stage proves harmful, destructive and even dangerous to humans, the planet and all living beings on this planet. Last, together with futurizing methods, we think ´pataphysics, and connected concepts, have the potential to act as an idea generator for sustainable future digital technology development.
