Abstract

A range of electrochemical and traditional techniques have recently been applied to determine the redox speciation in fluid from young (3.5Ma), sedimented basaltic crust. IODP CORK observatories installed along the Juan de Fuca Ridge flanks enabled the collection of near pristine basement fluids. These fluids were analyzed for a wide range of inorganic chemical species. This study focuses on the redox active chemical speciation, particularly of iron, manganese, and sulfur found in the basement fluids, and their oxidation rates.
