dc.description.abstract Normal pregnancy usually lasts 40 weeks, calculated from the first day of the last menstrual cycle, or approximately 38 weeks from the time of ovulation and conception. Preterm birth is defined by delivery at 36 weeks gestation or earlier. As long as expert neonatal care is available, the prospects for survival of otherwise normal fetuses delivered after 34 weeks' gestation are excellent, so that the problem of preterm birth principally affects babies delivered more than six weeks early (Creasy and Merkatz, 1990).
