Abstract

The purpose of the 1981 to 1983 monitoring program at the Barbers Point Outfall on Oahu, is two-fold: to describe the benthic community by utilizing micromollusks as index species and to establish a data base for continuing community analysis. 'Ibis report should be regarded as an initial step in an ongoing monitoring program. The conclusions as of the end of 1983 are as follows: 1. Analysis of the data indicates a consistent pattern of benthic community structure in the area of the Barbers Point Outfall at Honouliuli, Oahu. Shifts in the distribution pattern of the assemblages are interpreted as due to natural variability in the system. 2. A comprehensive, systematic, computerized data base has been established for micromollusk data in SAS at the University of Hawaii Computing Center. The data base contains all micromollusk data collected at Barbers Point and Mamala Bay between 1973 and April 1983 (data from Sept., Oct., and Nov. 1983 are currently being entered in the data base). Included in the data base are values for physicochemical characteristics of the samples. 3. The current sampling program appears to be adequate at this time and should be continued in its present form through 1984.
