dc.descriptionMildred “Midge” Kuahuia-Casuga was born on June 26, 1966, on the island of Oʻahu to Louis Kuahuia, a painter, and Gene Keka, a housewife. After birth, she was adopted by her grandparents on her father’s side, Ahmoy Aki-Casuga and Larry Casuga, both fishers and farmers, and was raised in the village of Miloliʻi. She attended Hoʻokena elementary and graduated from Konawaena, working as a bus driver and a farmer before beginning to work at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Park in 1999, where she still currently works. Didja Llanes was born in Kona, at Kealakekua hospital on January 12, 1963, to Alfredo Jimmy Llanes and Priscilla Oliveros Llanes. He grew up in Miloliʻi after living briefly in Māʻili on Oʻahu, and attended Hoʻokena School until eighth grade. He also participated in an after-school and boarding program at Alae School, dancing hula with Diane Aki, gardening, raising farm animals, and more, sponsored by Hawaiʻi County Economic Opportunity. He then attended Lahainaluna as a boarder for one year before returning to Hawaiʻi to attend and graduate from Konawaena in 1981. He worked at Mac Farms of Hawaiʻi after high school before being hired to the National Park Service at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau by Jack Casuga in 1986, where he also currently works.
