Abstract
Description
Abner Kawekane DeLima is a proud Lahainaluna boarder graduate of the class of 1955. He was born in 1937 and raised on the southern shore of Maui, called Makena. Lahainaluna is just a small part of the history that defines the town of Lahaina which was decimated by a bushfire in August of 2023. However, the impact that the school has had on students like Abner cannot be understated. Throughout the interview, Abner details the enduring memories he has gained during his time at the school, specifically highlighting the sense of responsibility that was instilled within him by the strict schedule. Within his four years at Lahainaluna, he worked at the dairy in which he took care of the calves and milked the cows in the early morning. He also participated in track and field and football, eventually winning a scholarship to play at UH Manoa. From his time at the school, Abner learned the importance of discipline and time management, and hard work. The culmination of his experiences resulted in a long career at the Honolulu Police Department and a beautiful family in which he raised with the same values taught to him by Lahainluna.
