Field Research: Imagining and Re-creating Anglo-Saxon Agricultural Protection Formulas, Appendices

Abstract

This article analyzes the Æcerbot (Old English field remedy) in its manuscript context, British Library MS Cotton Caligula A.vii, fols. 176r-178r, and in relation to other ritual performance texts from tenth-century Britain, in order to recreate its performative aspects. The appendices offer both a transcription and translation as well as a script imagining how the ritual might have been conducted over a two day period, who in the community would be involved, and how they would relate to the land.
