Abstract

Digital technologies are inherently futures-making and Information Systems is the study of the design, implementation and implications of those sociotechnical realities. Speculative epistemics for ‘futures with’ technologies are discussed as an alternative to traditional empirical studies of existing phenomena. These approaches make visible the conditions of possibility external to science that are implicated in and maintain the digital worlds that are studied. Multidisciplinary approaches to future epistemics are suggested to expand researchers’ capabilities to engage with futures as a site of inquiry.
