This session was the first elicitation of Group 3 (Tracy Preslar, Irina Kolenskaia) for Field Methods (LING 630) with Kristen Udui, our Palauan language expert. First, we discussed names in Mandarin and Palauan. We collected words for body position and movement toward a direction based on the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database wordlist (https://abvd.eva.mpg.de/austronesian/). We collected the orthographic form as well as a narrow IPA transcription. Kristen noted that only the word "turn" was a verb in Palauan, and that the other words were more stative rather than verbs. We collected sample sentences for some of the movement words with actor versus predicate emphases.
