Abstract

Description

Genre: Medicine/huru. Siu Dongge recorded by SD with the AT2020 mic 20 Sept -15 in the late morning. I and Pidhu went to Mbako to record, and coninued all the way down to kampong Dure (Mbako), at the house furthest down, overlooking the steep descent toward the plantations and the sea. Here Siu tells his 'huru bhapha' ("huru board"), one that we have recorded several times (compare). Here the 'huru' refers first of all to the symptoms that he cures, not to any curse-prohibition that causes such symptoms. Symptoms: swollen limbs, especially hands, wounds. The cure is with chewed areca nut and piper betel and lime, and with the materials: 'haja', 'lewe', 'tobacco', 'moro'. Siu 'bhulu wa'o' before he 'ngiru'; puts the mixture where it hurts. This adat prayer, asking for blessing by the ancestors, is in the beginning of the file. Present were also Pidhu (Ebbe), and relatives Steffen, Paulus and Nico, whose voices are heard in the recording. We had a good time and they were very open and liked to speak and teach, although it was my first visit. Pidhu knew them though and his family have relations extending to Dure/Mbabo. I brought the usual sirih pinang; a bottle of arak and tobacco. There were many women and children that we had to ask to leave because they would have disturbed the recordings. Frankly, "Keep quiet and you get to taste the arak" (it worked out ok). Photo: 'haja', main ingredient of this 'huru'.
