Description
Roen Hufford was born in Hoʻolehua, Molokaʻi in 1950. She was raised in Kāneʻohe, Oʻahu, and graduated from Castle High School. She briefly studied art at Pratt Institute in New York before returning to Oʻahu and finishing her art degree at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Roen’s mother, Marie McDonald, was a notable lei maker, dye artist, educator, and self-taught kapa maker. Roen started learning how to make kapa from her mother in 1987. In 1990, she and her husband Ken moved to Waimea on Hawaiʻi Island to live on a shared farm lot with her mother. Roen enjoys creating beautiful, intricate designs on her kapa using colors largely obtained from plant dyes and natural pigments. For several years, she has held weekly Monday kapa sessions at her house and has taught dozens of students in that time.
