Abstract
The Tehaiku Baitfish Farm is an experimental/commercial aquaculture venture. It was originally funded by the United Kingdom, with technical assistance and equipment from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Now it is operated under the umbrella of the Kiribati Fisheries Division. The primary objective of this facility is to provide baitfish (milkfish) for Te Mautari, the national fishing company, and its four pole-and-line vessels. The secondary objective is to produce food fish (milkfish) for local consumption. In addition to the primary facility at Temaiku, a research station is operated at Ambo, which is currently doing experimental work with prawn, crab, and milkfish. Ambo was the original site of the UNDP/FAO project.
