Abstract
The Japanese antinuclear movement has traditionally been seen as a classical NIMBY movement with only weak national networks. Several attempts have been made to explain its relative weakness before 2011. In his talk,
Tobias Weiss, a postdoctoral researcher with the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies at the University of Zurich, will look at a phenomenon, which has not been paid much attention, but has arguably played a role in weakening the movement: The building of a pronuclear countermovement since the 1980s. This talk will trace its roots and growth to considerable size
since the 1990s as well as changes that have taken place in the movement since 2011.
