Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between temperament and non-social play in Malaysian preschool children. Participants were 129 three to six years old children recruited from five preschools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Parents rated children’s temperament using the Children’s Behavior Questionnaire and teachers rated children’s non-social play behavior using the Play Behavior Scale. The findings showed that solitary-passive play was negatively correlated with attentional focusing and inhibitory control. Solitary-active play was negatively correlated with attentional focusing, inhibitory control, and shyness. In contrast, no significant correlations with temperament were found for reticent play. These findings suggest some similarities in the relation between temperament and non-social play in the Malaysian and Western cultures.
