| dc.description.abstract | This paper is an analysis of the history, conditions, and potential for the development of Hale'iwa and Waialua on the North Shore of O'ahu. The underlying purpose is to identify the key architectural and spatial characteristics of Hale'iwa and explore the development possibilities for the area which reestablish the historic identity of the town. The research involves in an investigation into the town development from 1830 to 2010, review of existing conditions in the area and applicable land use controls, survey of the architectural characteristics of the region, analysis of contemporary development potential, and recommendations for future development and standards. Research indicates despite the existing policy and legal measures enacted to preserve the rural character of Hale'iwa, the most architecturally significant character defining elements are overlooked by the historic district guidelines and the current land use regulations inhibit context appropriate development. Included in this document are a design proposal and a preliminary set of design guidelines for Hale'iwa. | |
