My paper, “Nothing Says I Despise You Like a Blowjob?: Opening Queer Moments for Queer Spaces in Harry Potter Slash Fan Fiction,” focuses on online slash fan fiction, narratives written by media fans that place two male characters in a homoerotic relationship. I concentrate on Harry/Draco (H/D) slash fan fiction, based on the Harry Potter series, and analyze two pieces of slash fan fiction in relation to queer theory. The paper draws its conceptual framework from Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's adaptation of René Girard's triangle of desire, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Roland Barthes' writerly text, and Judith Butler's notion of drag and fantasy, connecting slash fan fiction and queer reader responses in its transformation of dominant, heteronormative media. In reading queerly or non-normatively, “queer moments” fans recognize in popular media exposes the erotic potential of male homosocial bonds.
