A former Palama Settlement executive director talks in depth about his family, including his progressive architect and journalist parents; growing up in Manoa; English-standard schools; training in the UH School of Social Work; brother's political career, and the Moanalua Gardens Foundation, where he is education coordinator. Detailed are his experiences at Palama Settlement: history and philosophy of settlements, fresh-air camp, Pakolea and Model Cities programs, Samoan clientele, relationship with Aloha United Way, interaction with the courts and police, staff efforts, involvement of parents, and individual cases, both failures and successes.
