Freedom to Feel: An Experiential Approach to Humanistic Education

Abstract

The Salvation Army Facilities for Children encompasses several different operations at various locations. The Manoa Group Home and Kaimuki Cottages house kids from 12-17 who cannot get along at home, or whom the courts feel should not be at home for some reason. There are also three cottages on the Waialae grounds that house younger children (ages 6-12) with behavior disorders. The Kaioli Learning Center in Waialae is the home base for the school day for all the children. Although the younger ones have a separate schoolroom called the "Little School,” which is across the campus, they share the same library with the older kids at the Learning Center. The main building consists of one large carpeted room, the walls of which are lined with study carrels. (These are seldom used, for most of the studying takes place on the floor.) Smaller rooms down the hall in each direction include the office, restrooms, art room, typing room, meditation or quiet room, library, and academic room (where reading and math classes are held). There is also a large kitchen in the Center.
