Comparing Teacher and Student Perceptions about Second Language Writing Feedback

Abstract

This study examines the discrepancies between teachers’ and students’ perceptions on L2 writing feedback. In a survey of 47 students and six teachers at an English Intensive Program, it investigated whether teachers’ perceived satisfaction on part of students about the feedback they receive matches with that of students’ report in terms of the amount and types of feedback. The results showed mismatch between teachers’ expectation and students’ perception, as teachers tend to underestimate the effects of their feedback on students, whereas students seemed to be satisfied with the teacher feedback. Further, there was no significant correlation between specific feedback type and the level of students’ satisfaction.
