Abstract

Description

JennieLee Andrade was born to James Iwata and March Masako Yonamine-Iwata in 1944 and grew up surrounded by siblings and cousins. In JennieLee’s upbringing family was central to her childhood experience and she remembers getting to spend her joyous time with her siblings and cousins on Oʻahu, Maui and Kauai. In this interview, JennieLee speaks about her own time growing up in Waialeʻe until she was about 5 years old. JennieLee shares stories of her father, James Iwata, who was very close with his siblings and in-laws who lived in Kahuku and Waialeʻe. JennieLee recalls family gatherings at Waialeʻe from an early age where her dad, James, loved to dance hula, and celebrate with family and friends with pāʻina. James Iwata was respected and loved dearly by his daughter JennieLee. At the end of this interview, JennieLee shares with us her hopes for the future of Waialeʻe and the abundance it can share with those who are looking back to the “old ways” for reconnection and restoration for the ‘āina and for people.
