| dc.description | Wesley Sen was born in 1956 in Kapālama, Oʻahu. He was raised in Moanalua from the age of five, where he continues to reside with his wife. Wes first began making barkcloth in 1979 under the guidance of Mary Pritchard, who excelled in the Samoan practice of siapo. Wes did not have a specific kumu for kapa; like others during this time period, he was part of the Cultural Renaissance that helped bring kapa back to the fore, which involved much work in the way of rediscovery. An important aspect of this work for him has included making garments for hula practitioners, amongst other practical uses. Wes is an avid experimenter and researcher who seeks to make kapa using traditional methods. | |
