Abstract

The environment of Vibrio fischeri has been poorly understood until recently. This paper examined the presence of V. fischeri in the surface water and the marine sediments. With the use of a JuxA specific probe, V. fischeri could be detected in the environment. Water and sediment samples were taken from Paiko Reef, Oahu, Hawaii. It was discovered that V. fischeri was more abundant in the surface water than in the marine sediment. On average, 5.28 V. fischeri were found in the surface water and 1.50 V. fischeri were found in the marine sediment. Future experiments on different locations should be conducted to better understand the presence of V. fischeri in the marine environment.
