Abstract
"Geodetic studies of the Puna Geothermal Ventures (PGV) site and vicinity were initiated in 1992 by the State Geothermal Technical Advisory Committee to detect possible ground subsidence associated with production of geothermaI wells. The work was carried out by the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV) at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The techniques employed are standard methods of volcano monitoring used by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to study active Hawaiian Volcanoes. The project to date has included two phases of activity. In 1992, an array of 13 brass USGS benchmarks was installed and surveyed together with 6 existing marks (Figure 1). This provided baseline data to which future surveys could be compared. Significantly, this work was a complished before the PGV power plant went into production. The second phase, in 1994, was accomplished after production was well underway and involved resurveying the array, determination of relative height changes for each benchmark, and analysis of the data."
