Abstract
Beyond symbolic Olympics snub, China's market muscle brings ʻmassive challenges' to imposing effective sanctions, experts write. Quick Take:
- Global recognition of China's human rights abuses is growing, but its economic, military and diplomatic strength blunts the impact of traditional commercial and diplomatic levers.
- A recent East-West Center paper examines what kinds of economic diplomacy can be brought to bear to address this.
Options ranging from targeted sanctions to industry-led initiatives and symbolic acts such as the Olympic diplomatic boycott can at least help somewhat to ensure that US and other consumers are not unwittingly supporting China's abuses.
