ItemIt’s the Methodology For Me: A Systematic Review of Early Approaches to Studying TikTok( 2022-01-04)Research on TikTok has grown along with the app’s rapidly rising global popularity. In this systematic review, we investigate 58 articles examining TikTok, its users, and its content. Focusing on articles published in journals and proceedings across the domains of human-computer interaction, communication, and other related disciplines, we analyze the methods being used to study TikTok, as well as ethical considerations. Based on our analysis, we found that research on TikTok tends to use content analysis as their primary method and mainly focus on user behavior and culture, effects of use, the platform’s policies and governance, and very few articles discuss the ethical implications of collecting and analyzing such data. Additionally, most studies employ traditional forms of data collection when the affordances of TikTok tend to differ from other social media platforms. We conclude with a discussion about possible future directions and contribute to ongoing conversations about ethics and social media data.
ItemDoes Your Smile Mean That You’re Happy? – a Multi-Channel Analysis of Emotional Reactions( 2022-01-04)In Information Systems (IS) research, emotions are primarily measured using facial expressions of participants or self-reported survey results. To unite both measurement foci, we analyze the impact of facial emotional reactions to computer-induced stimuli on self-reported evaluations towards the respective stimulus by using a multi-method experimental approach with multi-channel analysis. We collected emotional expressions of happiness of 176 participants using eye-tracker and webcam technology together with a post-experimental survey. We contribute to IS research by supplementing self-reported measures of emotion with a physical emotional measure in response to a system’s feature, and by relating these measured emotional physical responses to individual behavior.
ItemConducting Online Focus Groups - Practical Advice for Information Systems Researchers( 2022-01-04)Video-based online focus groups present an emerging opportunity for IS researchers to collect rich data. They allow researchers to assemble participants from all over the world who collectively discuss contemporary IS phenomena. In order to realize the full potential of online focus groups for IS research, we need to understand the challenges and uncover possible solutions for designing and conducting online focus groups. We review prior (online) focus group literature in and beyond the IS discipline. Additionally, we provide a detailed account of our own experiences with seven online focus groups in the context of digital platforms. In supplementing our own experiences with those of others in prior literature, we present the conditions under which online focus groups are especially appropriate, summarize the challenges inherent in the online focus group method and provide practical advice on its application.
