Evolution of IS Competencies due to Mandatory Telework on Organizational scale – A Work-Systems Approach
    ( 2021-01-05) Singh, Harshit ; Verma, Sanjay
Given the recent pandemic crisis, telework has become a mandatory practice for organizations across the world. Mandatory large scale implementations of telework are an abrupt technological shift in organizations which presents a unique set of challenges for organizational competencies. In this research initiative, we derive from the work systems framework to analyze the consequences of telework shift on organizational competencies from a resource-based view. Many organizations are inexperienced and unprepared to implement telework on an organizational scale. We analyze how organizations have been affected by these large scale implementations of mandatory telework and how the competencies of these organizations have been affected. Content and thematic analysis of several interviews of managers across organizations supervising teleworking teams have been done to provide insights into how IS competencies have been affected by this shift.

Developing a Taxonomy for Digital Platforms – A Conceptual Approach
( 2021-01-05) Freichel, Chiara ; Fieger, Julius ; Winkelmann, Axel
Disruptive companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon transform economic and business activity. Faced with their growing economic importance, digital platforms are increasingly adopting essential functions in business and daily life. Discussions of platforms are extended by decisive aspects accompanying this development. Established economic, social, and organization theory show limitations in understanding and describing digital platforms. Researchers need a sophisticated conceptualization of the complex manifold perspectives to fully understand the dynamics of digital platforms and lead the development of platforms in the proper direction. To enable comparability of research results and uniform theory building, this study analyzes existing literature and conceptually develops a comprehensive taxonomy for digital platforms based on multi-faceted approaches. Our taxonomy consists of technological, economic, and socio-cultural perspectives with sixteen dimensions and corresponding characteristics analyzed in detail, which helps scholars classify and articulate the full range of digital platform specifications.

Datafication of Knowledge Work: A Framework and Research Agenda
    ( 2021-01-05) Fischer, Louise ; Wunderlich, Nico
Datafication is moving into the center of value creation in the knowledge intensive organization. Datafication describes the transformation of qualitative behavior and tacit knowledge into quantified actions and codified data. While traditional assumptions on knowledge work highlights individual autonomy in shaping job tasks and fitting abilities for productive work, the consequences of datafication for knowledge work are not yet well understood. We build on the contingency theory of performance as theoretical lens to derive a framework that addresses relevant future research questions in the evolving field of datafication in knowledge work. The proposed multi-level framework considers assumptions and elements from traditional productive knowledge work in combination with determinants of digital workplaces and organizational factors along the lines of data-based value creation and (semi-)automated decision making. For the future, we suggest viewing datafied knowledge work as a socio-technical phenomenon, thereby constituted of human-dominated knowledge work in convergence with technological-dominated algorithmic thinking.

Combining Individual and Organizational Capabilities: An Integrated Maturity Model for Ambidexterity
( 2021-01-05) Huber, Rocco Xaver Richard ; Renner, Julia ; Stahl, Bastian
Ambidexterity, the ability to simultaneously explore and exploit, has become a success factor to benefit from digitalization. Yet, especially for market incumbents, it is still challenging to develop needed capabilities for mastering ambidexterity. Existing work on ambidexterity lacks approaches for a holistic and combined perspective on the organization and the individual. Therefore, we develop an Individual and Organizational Ambidexterity Maturity Model (IOAMM) that provides holistic guidance for practitioners in approaching ambidexterity. Based on a literature review, our model consists of two dimensions for individual and organizational capabilities and is structured along five maturity stages. A preliminary evaluation with industry experts provides first feedback regarding comprehensiveness, consistency, and problem adequacy. Our IOAMM contributes to research by integrating two previously separate perspectives and extending both perspectives by a digital capability. For practitioners, it provides practical guidance for assessing and developing needed capabilities.
