Knowledge Innovation and Entrepreneurial Systems

The knowledge-based view emphasizes the importance of knowledge for organizations to retain their competitive advantage. The success of knowledge sharing practices is vital because it results in shared intellectual capital. Knowledge sharing success lies in the employees’ capability to share they know and how they know it. Knowledge systems support sharing practices through their ability to identify, capture, organize, store and disseminate ideas, practices and processes that can impact organizational performance. To the extent such systems can be innovative in their approach to managing organizational resources enables strategies that can foster competitive advantage. Entrepreneurial practices pursue and embed innovation. The Knowledge Innovation and Entrepreneurial Systems track presents research at the intersection of innovative knowledge ideas and practices that enable positive change in organizations. Manuscripts explore systems developed to foster creativity and innovation while facilitating collaboration via knowledge capture, storage and transfer. Evolving infrastructures such as the Internet of Things, the Location of Things and the sharing economy are creating invaluable information assets that, if properly utilized, can deliver positive impacts to organizational performance.

Sixteen mini-tracks attracted 84 paper submissions for the KIES research track. The track chairs, minitrack chairs and HICSS administrators seek to preserve and grow the strong community of scholars. We appreciate and thank the efforts of all our colleagues who submitted and/or reviewed papers – as always, the ideas, insights and comments shared through your work are invaluable. Forty-four papers were accepted from the following minitracks:

Addressing Diversity in Digitalization focuses on inclusive design and application processes, practices and routines of organizing data and information systems that consider the role of diversity.

Augmented Intelligence explores the issues and topics related to designing and implementing augmented intelligence systems.

Design and Appropriation of Knowledge and AI Systems explores how knowledge and AI systems are planned, designed, built, implemented, used, evaluated, supported, upgraded, and evolved; and how knowledge and AI systems impact the context in which they are embedded.

Emerging Trends in Crowd Science focuses on creating a community dedicated to research on ITmediated crowds

Human-Centered Design for Digital Innovations investigates the field of human-centered design in close relationship with digital innovations, digitization and requirements engineering.

Illuminating The Dark Side of Knowledge explores a “dark side” that holds enormous risks for individuals, communities, organizations and even whole societies.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice presents research cases on the role that integration of KM principles and systems may play in facilitating entrepreneurial enterprises.

Innovation in Organizations: Learning, Unlearning, and Intentional Forgetting addresses the learning and forgetting paradigms in organizations and information systems. Additionally, the process of unlearning is explored.

International Business and Born Digitals covers aspects related to international business, digitalization, knowledge intensive firms like born digitals, and the role of culture within these contexts.

Judgement, Big Data-Analytics and Decision- Making focuses on the humanistic aspects of knowledge innovation, by investigating how dataanalytics, and big data analytics in particular, can be used to support human judgement and organizational knowledge.

Knowledge Flows, Transfer, Sharing, and Exchange presents manuscripts that examine the nature and role of knowledge flows among entities. Technical, managerial, behavioral, organizational, & economic perspectives are explored.

Knowledge Management and Entrepreneurship in Early Stage Firms explores early stage firms/ start-ups or mature firms, or both as comparisons, focusing on the knowledge and entrepreneurship challenges associated with different levels of firm maturity.

Reports from the Field: Knowledge and Learning Applications in Practice considers KM practices by providing a “bridge” between the KM systems practitioner community and the scholars that build theory and conduct research in that domain.

Security in Knowledge Systems and Managing Knowledge Risks investigates issues related to security and protection of intellectual assets and explore how organizations can use security measures to protect their KM practices.

The Technical, Socio-Economic and Ethical Aspects of AI explores how to build and implement AI systems that support humans without expressing bias or other ethical concerns.

Value, Success and Performance Measurements of Knowledge, Innovation and Entrepreneurial Systems explores strategies, methodologies, and stories related to performance measurements that can be used to assess various aspects of and success of KM.
