Abstract:Hawaii’s public high schools lack structured sexual health education which hinders adolescents’ ability to make healthy informed sexual decisions, increasing their risk for unintended teenage pregnancy and acquisition of a sexually transmitted infection. The purpose of this evidence-based practice pilot project was to increase sexual health education literacy and increase safe sexual behaviors, to ultimately reduce the risks of unintended teenage pregnancy and STIs. A comprehensive sexual health education curriculum was created to deliver professional, medically accurate, and age-appropriate sexual health information to the sample population. Convenience sampling of Farrington High School’s “Health Academy” was used to select the sample population. Sexual health content knowledge and safe sexual behavior was measured using pre and post CSHE tests. As a result, there was a significant increase in sexual health knowledge as evidenced by an increase in the average score from the content pre-tests to the post-tests. There was also an increase in safe sexual behaviors as evidenced by an increase in the average score from the sexual risk pre-assessments to the post-assessments.
