Abstract:For several years the Bureau of Commercial
Fisheries Biological Laboratory, Honolulu, Hawaii,
has been interested in holding captive tuna
in ponds, and in 1958-59 conducted a series of
tests of salt well-water as a medium for these
fish. Preliminary experiments took place in a
concrete cylinder 8 ft in internal diameter and
5 ft high, in which were confined a variety of
reef and semipelagic fish, the latter being important
because of our need to anticipate difficulties
