    A reference model-driven Architecture linking Business Processes and Services

    While an important area of research in the services community is focused on the composition of services to orchestrate processes, based mainly on the WS-BPEL standard with a services view, we take a different standpoint. Ours has also a business perspective, defining services to support the execution of business processes (BPs) in a BPMS platform. Our vision focuses on process and service models and the relationships between them, allowing traceability between elements belonging to the business and the software areas. This paper presents a reference model-driven architecture linking BPs to services, automating the generation of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) from BPs architectures. Our approach applies both to collaborative and orchestration BPs; in the first scenario it helps support the agreements reached regarding interactions between different organizations. We believe the application of our model-driven approach, which is based on metamodels, models and transformations between them, can support organizations in their effort to align their BPs with service support.

    Connected Enterprise Meets Connected Customer - A Design Approach

    In an increasingly digitized environment, enterprises face new challenges. Enabled by ubiquitous Internet accessibility, people, places, and products have become more interconnected and are gradually merging into the Internet of Everything. Simultaneously, a new generation of connected customers is emerging that is establishing new requirements for the capabilities of enterprises to communicate, interact, and respond to unforeseen events. As customer satisfaction is the central source of future competitiveness, companies must initiate a transformation towards a connected enterprise. By analyzing the characteristics of the connected customer, this paper presents guidelines for enterprises to address customer needs adequately and manage their operations in the Internet of Everything. Building upon established enterprise architecture frameworks, we apply a Design Science Research procedure to derive four practical recommendations. Thus, enterprises must manage their business processes holistically, implement information systems and standards for data exchange, provide mechanisms for real-time business intelligence, and determine their optimal degree of connectivity.

    A Modelling Technique for Enterprise Agility

    Enterprise agility, i .e., the ability of enterprises to respond to changes, is a core imperative for effective change management. It can improve operational efficiency as well as support resource optimization. Yet, it is challenging and a major concern for corporate executives. To facilitate agility, it can be useful to design modeling constructs for representing changes. Such modeling constructs can help stakeholders to represent and better understand change concepts. This research contributes by extending existing enterprise modeling approaches with new modeling constructs for representing concepts of change. These modeling constructs are integrated into a conceptual model.     A Primer on NoSQL Databases for Enterprise Architects: The CAP Theorem and Transparent Data Access with MongoDB and Cassandra

    MongoDB and Apache Cassandra are the dominant "Not Only SQL" (NoSQL) database management systems for persisting structured records. Moreover, the pair are respectively in the top-five and top-ten of database management systems generally. Therefore this work seeks to present the two leading systems, along with the underlying principle of the CAP Theorem, in the context of creating transparent data access tiers capable of supporting flexible enterprise architectures.

    How to decompress the Pressure - The moderating Effect of IT Flexibility on the negative Impact of Governmental Pressure on Business Agility

    In times of digital transformation banks need to behave agile and increase their speed in IT. At the same time, they are bound by an increasing number of regulatory rules at an increasing pace that force them to act carefully. Since governments frequently introduce new regulatory terms, especially in the finance sector, regulation is a changing phenomenon itself, which forces banks to adjust and change their systems constantly. To manage these challenges, we argue that successful businesses need to have a flexible IT architecture in place. This should enable them to update and reconfigure their systems in a cost effective and prompt manner. By doing this, they should be able to compensate for the regulatory pressure and remain agile. Based on an analysis of 119 survey results, we find that business agility is indeed lower for higher regulatory pressure and that this effect is mitigated by a flexible IT.

    Business Capability Maps: Current Practices and Use Cases for Enterprise Architecture Management

    This paper provides a state-of-the-art report on the usage of business capability maps in enterprise architecture management. We conducted expert interviews with 25 organizations to reveal the benefits and challenges of capability-based enterprise architecture management and evaluated 14 use cases on the feasibility and benefit of using business capability maps in practice. The results reveal increasing interest and acceptance of the approach in practice and among support organizations.
