|Abstract:||The novel is a powerful tool for leaming, whether in the ESL classroom or in a literature course. what makes it either an enriching experience or a painfully difficult task depends heavily on the book itself, the proficiency level of the students, and the obtectives the instructor has set for the class. Cleariy, the preceding items should ali be in agreement. Presented here is a proposal to create a positive, nonpailful, experience. The paper outlines 1) the criteria used to select the proposed novel, Armie Iohn. 2) a discussion of the influence communicatively based objectives have upon book selection and activities, and 3) actual tasks thought to be aPProPriate for high intermediate or advanced level students.|
