Abstract
Description
Genre: Oral history. Title: Maria Methi (b. 1988) tells the life story of the legendary Mari Longa (c. 1855-1908), known for his resistance against the Dutch, and for having joined in two assaults on the city Ende. This recording is unusual ibecuase it was prepared as a text, recently written down by the narrator who had been asked to write something interesting about local history. The knowledge of this tale, as oral history, stands out in comparison with the other tales about Mari Longa, including by his direct descendants. Supposedly there was a whisper from the supernatural. Anyhow, regardless of the facts, it is a composition that reads well, and Indonesian words were probably fewer than had it been recorded directly without the text. In addition, this text and the one about Methi Liru, concerns big people and ancestors. A line of Mari Longa descendants reached Palu'e through Mari's youngest son Wora, whose son Wiwi was married to Mama Tani (Maurole) and whose family is related by marriage to the narrator's mother and to Wora (who also tells Mari Longa in a later recording), her oldest uncle. SD later made a journey to meet the direct descendent of Mari Longa (4th gen.) Frans Malo in his house in Ende, but it turned out that this tale by Methi was more valuable. This biographic history was told in the evening 10 October 2014 in the narrator's home. Present in the house were Methi's father, mother and brother, with only the latter one joining us at the table. This recording was made with the H4N Zoom mounted on a small tripod put on the table. The living/dining/guest room is half thatched with bamboo, from about a meter of cemented wall, and the ceiling is quite high; good for recording. Not so noisy surroundings either. Photo witth her brother Mboe in their home, that was often used as a studio. The house is situated at the top of the hill/village, with a great view towards the sea.
