Abstract
Since the University of Hawaii baseball team began playing its all college schedule in 1975 it has grown in stature. Unheralded in 1975 the Rainbows, "Hawaii's Team," have become an institution. The baseball team is not alone among University of Hawaii athletic teams which have earned national recognition, yet it maintains a certain identity with people in Hawaii that has endured. Perhaps the source of that identity may be found in the following excerpt: Although sansei and later generations do not realize it, not just AJAs, but everyone in our multi-ethnic society, owes a lot to baseball. The crucial social role of athletics was pointed out as early as 1907 in an article on sports in Picturesque Honolulu. " . . . the athletic field is proving to be one of the greatest factors in wiping out the many race lines, tempering the prejudices of one against the other, proving the general brotherhood of man in spite of the variants of color, and imbuing the representatives of each of the many races with the spirit of fair play, toleration and mutual respect and good will." Baseball in Hawaii has been a popular game for decades. Nevertheless, the popularity and status of the baseball Rainbows is unprecedented.
