SilverPlatter and MultiPlatter: Multiplatter Installation at the University of Hawaii
(American Society for Information Science, 1990-05) Chantiny, Martha
Despite various and often contradictory predictions, CD-ROMs have neither taken the world by storm nor yet been superseded by a newer technology. They have, however, established themselves as a viable means for the distribution of certain types of information. Their capacity for storing very large amounts of data is what makes them so attractive. The fact that they have been limited to a single user has been perhaps their greatest drawback. Since their introduction, consumers have been trying to devise ways of networking these powerful tools. Although there are still significant licensing issues involved, the technical problems are beginning to be resolved. Three speakers from sites which have CD-ROM networks up and running will describe how they implemented and are running the networks.

Digital Landscape: the Hawaiian Newspapers, War Records and Trust Territory Image Repository of the University of Hawaii
(University of Illinois at Chicago, 2000-06) Chantiny, Martha ; Cartwright, James ; Peacock, Karen ; Hori, Joan
This paper discusses the nature of three image collections - Hawaiian language newspapers, Hawaii War Records Depository (HWRDJ and Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands Photographs - as well as future plans and desires for these digital collections, funded as an IMLS project. The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) Library has traditionally had strong ties and a responsibility for serving information needs in the Pacific Islands region. The Hawaiian Newspapers, War Records, and Trust Territory lmage Repository Project broadens the range of Library services and provides library and research institutions in the Pacific region with opportunities to interact directly with sources which were formerly beyond their reach. The IMLS-funded project will provide a mechanism to explore the utility of digital surrogates for the local, national, and international research community. This Project hopes to demonstrate that wider access to these materials will significantly strengthen Hawaiian and Pacific historical scholarship. These three collections represent significant historical resources of interest nationally and internationally. These three collections will create a foundation to begin building a true digital library of Hawaiian and Pacific resources.

Digitized Images from the Trust Territory of the Pacific in the UHCARL PAC Online Catalog at the University of Hawaii Libraries
(Library and Information Technology Association, 1992-09) Chantiny, Martha
The University of Hawaii Libraries received a federal grant to acquire scanning and digitized image storage equipment. The Libraries will be utilizing prototype CARLterm retrieval software jointly developed by the Boulder Public Library and the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries to preserve an important archival visual resource for Pacific researchers. The software links bibliographic records describing images with the digitized images themselves. Prior to digitization these photographs were not available for general research. A review of the progress of the project and a display of the images will be presented.

    Implementing a LANtastic CD-ROM Network
    ( 1992) Chantiny, Martha
A LANtastic network to provide access to shared CD-ROM drives was installed at the University of Hawaii Sinclair Undergraduate Library in early 1990. In this chapter, background on related CD-ROM projects at the University of Hawaii Libraries is provided. Reasons for choosing LANtastic and an overview of the installation, upgrading and maintenance of the network are discussed. LANtastic network products, equipment and specific experiences related to the use of LANtastic for access to networked CD-ROM drives are desribed. Future plans for expanding the number of share CD-ROM drives and evaluation of the system are presented.

Development of the Windows-Based CARL Cataloging Workstation at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Libraries
    ( 1993) Chantiny, Martha
The contract between the University of Hawaii and CARL Systems, Inc. to acquire an Online Integrated Library Automation System for the University of Hawaii System was signed in late March 1990. The balance of that year was spent installing the mainframe computer equipment, loading and indexing the library's bibliographic database, and testing the converted data with the CARL software. The Public Access Catalog and Circulation modules began live operations in January 1991. Work did not begin on the cataloging specifications included in the contract until the basic system and the Serials and Acquisition modules were operational. During the pre-contract negotiations between the University of Hawaii Libraries (UHM) and CARL Systems, Inc. (CARL), it became apparent that the existing dumb-terminal-based Bibliographic Maintenance module would not be adequate to serve the sophisticated cataloging needs of the University academic research library with extensive collections of materials in foreign languages and non-roman character sets. The University of Hawaii Library and CARL Systems, Inc. agneed to cooperatively develop a new cataloging module which would satisfy the contract requirements specified by UHM. This development work was to take place long distance, using electronic mail as a primary means of communicating between the collaborators.
