Abstract
In Chinese history, the T'ang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907) was outstanding for being the golden age of Chinese culture. Poetry in particular was the most amazing creative product of this age; both in terms of quantity and quality, T'ang poetry has never been surpassed. The height of T'ang poetry coincided with the height of T'ang culture known as sheng T'ang which lasted from approximately 713 to 779. These decades produced the greatest Chinese poets of all time; Li Po (701-762), Tu fu (712-770), Meng Hao-jan (689-740), Wang Wei (699-759), Ts'en Sheng (715-770), and Po Chu-i (772-846). Many of these names are already familiar to westerners, thanks to abundant translations and scholarly studies on these poets. However, there were scores of other highly talented poets who flourished not only during sheng T'ang but during every phase of the dynasty. I found Tu mu (803-852) of the late T'ang period to be ove of those high quality poets who is, unfortunately, relatively unknown to westerners, simply because he has not been widely translated. In A Research Guide to English Translations of Chinese Verse, published in l977, only 33 of his 487 extant poems were listed. The editors no doubt missed some, but the fact remains that Tu mu's poems have not been translated very often into English, not to mention his prose.
