Abstract
For centuries much attention has been directed toward learning the exact role biological molecules such as polynucleotides, and structural and enzymatic proteins play in the origin and continuation of life. Of prime importance is a complete understanding of the "functional or active site of the biomolecule. In the past radioactive isotopes have been successfully used as probes, while more recent have been the uses of fluorescence which allows one to study optical transitions involving the site during binding or reaction. A modification of this technique is to add a dye molecule which acts as a. secondary probe while bound to the active site, and from a study of spectral shifts in emission maxima use­ful deductions can be made about the polarity of the microscopic environ­ ment of the bound dye.
