Abstract: | Infrared studies of trioctylamine hydrochloride and trioctylamine perchlorate in l, 2-dichlorocthane and in benzene have been made. A tightly hydrogen-bonded ion-pair structure was found for the hydrochloride, but for the perchlorate, anion-cation hydrogen-bonding does not seem to occur, though there is some kind of interaction present. On the addition of chloroform-d to the solutions, the amine hydrochloride was still found as a tightly hydrogen-bonded ion-pair with vc little chloride-chloroform-d interaction occurring in comparison to that found in quaternary salts. No hydrogen bonding between the perchlorate anion and chloroform-d was found. |
