dc.description.abstract | Far infrared studies of several salts of tri-n-octylamine have been conducted. Spectra were obtained for these salts in the solid state as well as in carbon tetrachloride and chloroform solutions. Two absorption bands were observed in the 100 cm-1 range. On the basis of a definite anion effect and the large degree of independence of these bands on the degree of aggregation, they were assigned to the stretching modes of the basic ion-pair. To explain the presence of two absorption bands it was proposed that besides the non-aliphatic hydrogen-bond between the cation and the anion these salts may also possess a cation-anion hy drogen-bond involving the lambda-methyl hydrogens. | |
