Abstract
The potassium-argon dating technique is based on the fact that one of the three isotopes of potassium, K-40, naturally decays to Ca-40 by beta-emission and to Ar-40 by electron capture. Because the rate of decay is known, the time elapsed since the formation of a rock or mineral can be found by knowing the quantities of the parents and daughter it contains.
