dc.description.abstract The kinetics of induction of enzyme systems have been well defined in bacterial systems. It has been found in bacterial systems that there is a lag time of 3 to 4 minutes after addition of inducer, before the first appearance of enzyme. The half life of M-RNA in bacterial systems has been determined to be between l.4 and 2.5 minutes. The determinations of the half-lives of M-RNA in higher systems however, have yielded more varied values. The values have varied from 2.7 to 30 minutes. It was the object of this research to determine the half-life of galactokinase M-RNA in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, using methods similar to those of Lawther and Cooper 1973. The experiments were inconclusive due to large fluctuations in enzyme levels after millipore filtration.
