Abstract
The immunological phenomenon of tumor rejection in mice is a process dependent on the initial period of tumor exposure. Swiss female mice injected lrlth Ehrlich's ascites tumor (EAT) subcutaneously in the tail followed by amputation and challenged with a second subcutaneous EAT injection, demonstrate a high percentage of rejection up to 35 days of exposure to the first injection. As this exposure period is extended beyond 35 days, the percentage of animals capable of rejecting the second tumor injection decreased tremendously. Thus, the outcome of the extended initial tumor exposure appears to be one of failure of the host defense system to reject the second tumor challenge. The nature of this failure appears to be the key to the solutions of tumor rejection.
