Studies on the Action of Theophylline on Tetrahymena Pyriformis

Abstract

Theophylline, 1,3-dimethylxanthine, is a naturally occuring drug found in the leaves of Thea sinensis, the extract of which is used as a stimulant beverage called tea. In mammalian systems, theophyllines stimulates the central nervous system, acts on the kidney to produce diuresis, stimulates cardiac muscles, and relaxes smooth muscle, notably bronchial muscle. It is similar in chemical constitution and pharacological action to caffeine and theobromine.
